This weekend past (28-30 July) saw the Pollack leg of our Summer Species Hunt League.
There has been some great pollack fishing all over N.I this Summer with big fish even taking baits intended for other quarry over clean ground venues and at distance.
However this weekend was a slog with many anglers struggling in horrible weather and sometimes even dangerous conditions on the usual rock venues that pollack frequent.
Pollack were thin on the ground and one theory is that they are currently predesposed with chasing large shoals of sprats/whitebait particularly on the Antrim coast.
Some of our anglers had a flurry of activity late on saturday evening when a "bait ball" of such bait fish came close to where they were angling and a lot of small pollack, coalfish and mackerel were caught on lures.
A few fish were recorded though only one of them could be regarded as a sizeable pollack with Gary Mccurry winning the weekend with a 53cm fish.
Gareth Owens-Storey was second with 46cm and Barry Platt third with 44cm.
The next leg of our league is a double header with conger eel and three beard rockling being the target species.
It again could prove interesting if the weather doesnt improve soon.
