Lure angling is growing in popularity with lrf (light rock fishing) and hrf (hard rock fishing) becoming an obsession of many sea anglers and quiet often the only way many folk fish nowadays.
The range of lures and false baits available are practically space aged compared to the metal spinners and eddystone eels of twenty years ago.
With all this in mind, NIFSA ran a lure only hunt over the past ten months having secured sponsorship in the form of some nice prizes from MAJORCRAFT who specialise in the lrf/hrf market.
The target species were pollack, coalfish, bass, corkwing wrasse, flounder, mackerel and ballan wrasse, with the only stipulations being that they were caught on a lure in N.I
There were some nice fish landed over the year, with the best of each species as follows
Pollack 62cm Andy Rankin
Coalfish 52cm Jay Eff
Bass 66cm Karl Rooney
Corkwing 21cm Jay Eff
Mackerel 38 cm Gary Mccurry / Gareth Bell
Ballan wrasse 41cm Andrew Ryder
Only two anglers managed to catch all seven species with bass, corkwing and flounder being the most elusive species.
Top three lure anglers 2023 and winning the Majorcraft gear are
1st Paddy O'boyle 25pts
2nd Gary McCurry 28pts
3rd Jay Eff 29pts
These prizes will be presented at the agm in Jan.
We will be running this comp again in 2024. If lure angling is your thing and you fancy a bit of competition in a relaxed format with a bit of craic, message the page.
