Northern Ireland Federation of Sea Anglers today met with DAERA fisheries minister Edwin Poots, South East MP Paul Girvan and MLA’s Alex Easton and Gordon Dunne.
There to meet them were NIFSA members Barry Platt, Garry Gregg, Harry Mckee Snr and Harry Mckee Jnr.
The meeting took place in the surroundings of Bangor Marina and gave NIFSA the chance to press home our federations wants and needs.
On the agenda was
A/ NIFSA gaining full control of our home waters and our forthcoming representation at national and international level.
B/ NIFSA representation at the decision table enabling us to help charter future
1/ Inshore commercial fishing areas
2/ All recreational sea angling
3/ Enhancement and conservation of our fishes and crustaceans within our coastal areas
C/ Uncontrolled wrasse exploitation
The use of wrasse cleaner fish on Scottish salmon farms as a treatment for sea lice should be suspended due to serious welfare and environmental issues.
D/ Reintroduction of Thornback Rays back into Belfast and Larne Lough
E/ The setting of artificial reefs within Belfast Lough
The meeting was extremely fruitful with the political attendees warming to our ideals and wants for conservation and rights. We will now be representing sea angling in Northern Ireland at the highest level of environmental decisions and will never be left out in the future.
