This weekend saw the second leg of our Summer Species Hunts where members target a certain species from 7pm on Friday until 7pm on Sunday.
We were after Ballan Wrasse this time and while weather conditions weren't too bad for rock/rough ground angling, many anglers struggled to find the quarry in any great numbers.
The commercial targeting of this species has seen a serious decline in numbers on venues where thirty fish in a session was once possible. We've ranted before about the trapping and retaining of Wrasse in pots which are then sent to Scotland as "cleaner" fish on Salmon farms where thier life expectancy is much reduced but to no avail. It's just sad to see such a once plentiful Summer fish decimated the way it has been.
Anglers reported catches of pollack, dogfish and bullhuss while targeting the Wrasse and fortunately quite a few managed to catch the target fish after putting in the hours.
Top rods this weekend where
1st Stephen Martin 44cm
2nd Paul Hill 43cm
=3rd Paddy O'boyle 37cm
=3rd Barry Platt 37cm
Gary Mccurry, Stephen Hodge, Lee Mullan and William Cairns also managed to break the 30cm mark.
Our next hunt will be Pollack.
